On 4 February 2008, His Honour Judge Jonathan Durham Hall said he was "astonished" at the Crown Prosecution Service's "absolutely bewildering" attempts to drop the prosecution of a man caught carrying a 3 foot felling axe in a crowd. The man, Daniel Bleazard, 34, had wanted to provoke armed Police into opening fire. Not only that, but Bleazard had previous criminal convictions and it was only the intervention of a Huddersfield Police Inspector which caused the trial to proceed. Despite the efforts of the CPS to drop the case, Bleazard was convicted and received 6 years imprisonment for this and 3 other charges.
Not for nothing is the CPS known as the "Criminals Protection Society".
